Glenn Maxwell Retires from ODI Cricket: End of an Explosive Era
Australia’s flamboyant all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), bringing an end to a spectacular 13-year journey in the 50-over format. The 36-year-old decided the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where Australia bowed out in the semifinals against India.
Record-Breaking Career
Maxwell retires as one of the most dynamic players in ODI history, boasting the highest strike rate (126.70) among players with over 2000 ODI runs. In 149 matches, he amassed 3,990 runs, including four centuries and 23 half-centuries, and also contributed with the ball, taking 77 wickets, with best figures of 4/40.
Unforgettable Moments
Maxwell will be most remembered for his heroic 201 against Afghanistan* during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Battling severe cramps and overwhelming heat, he single-handedly led Australia to a miracle chase from 91/7, a knock he later described as his “where-were-you-when” moment in his book The Showman.
He was a key member of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup-winning teams, becoming a cult figure among fans for his explosive batting and showmanship.
Reasons Behind the Decision
Speaking on the Final Word podcast, Maxwell cited physical toll and declining fitness in 50-over cricket as key reasons behind his retirement.
“I felt like I was letting the team down… If I don’t have the perfect conditions, my body just struggles to get through that,” he admitted.
He shared that he had a candid conversation with Selector George Bailey, during which he expressed his belief that it was time for the next generation to take over, especially with an eye on the 2027 World Cup.
Looking Ahead
Maxwell emphasized that he didn’t want to “hold on for selfish reasons” and is now turning his focus to the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, along with domestic and global T20 leagues such as the Big Bash League (BBL).
A Career of Highs and Grit
From being “picked ahead of his time” to playing pivotal roles in Australia’s biggest victories, Maxwell’s journey has been filled with thrilling highs, moments of adversity, and unmatched flair.
“Since then, I’ve gone through the ups and downs—being dropped, brought back, playing in World Cups. I was just proud to be part of some great teams,” Maxwell reflected.
As “The Big Show” takes his final bow from the ODI stage, he leaves behind a legacy of fearless cricket, unforgettable performances, and a strike rate that may not be matched for years.
